It’s not important who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me. - Batman
The Y's mission is simply stated. "Continue to strengthen our community by promoting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility". Over the past few years my role has grown at the Waltham YMCA. I continue to be a very active member at the YMCA along with my family with our commitment to live a healthy lifestyle, I have continued strides in goals I have set from a Board Member prospective to bring positive changes into the community and I am an avid promotor of the Annual Fund Campaign. Last year I exceeded my goal of $2500 and raised over $7000 to support the initiatives at our local branch.
This year I took part in an event at the Waltham YMCA which really impacted me. The MLK Day Event is held each year at the Waltham YMCA to invite those less fortunate, homeless or in transitional housing to shop for clothing from our many donated items. The number of donations was extraordinary to see how our community has come together to support those in need. Volunteering at the event I was able to assist and meet many of those in need in our community. One touching moment was when a little girl (about 6 years old, the same age as my kids) came up to me and was so grateful for a new pair of shoes she was able to pick out for her mother. She couldn’t thank me enough to be able to assist her in helping her find these new shoes. Another moment was when I was helping a little boy about 5 years old. He was unsure on sizing of clothes, but we searched through some piles and found some Nike and Under Armor Sweatshirts. You would have thought it was Christmas when we found a few that were his size. He was so excited to be able to have these items to be just like his friends at school. This event was very touching for me and I was glad that even with such little effort on my part I was able to see joy in so many who are less fortunate.
All of these reasons above and more are why I’m proud to support the Waltham YMCA as an Annual Fund Campaigner. I hope you’ll consider making a personal gift to the campaign. Please know that every gift, regardless of size, makes a difference. The YMCA has been helping people throughout our community to learn, grow and thrive for more than 160 years. As our community evolves and faces new challenges, so has our YMCA evolved to meet those needs. Whether it’s addressing the academic achievement gap, supporting individuals facing chronic diseases or providing financial assistance so that all people may access our programs and services, the Y is there to meet the challenge and make our community stronger. Your support can help make that possible.
I am very proud to have such a large part in the overall foundation of the Waltham Y and hope you will join me in supporting the Y in 2017
