We are offically kicking off our 4th year of sending kids to overnight camp in the Whelan Family name. This campaign has continued to grow: both financially and the number of supporters. Last year we almost tripled the number of children impacted in their name!
Here is a little background on how this all came to be:
A few year's back after losing my grandfather in November 2014, we set up the Buddy Whelan Memorial “Send a Kid” to camp campaign. In his memory and to honor his community involvement, my initial goal was to send one child to the Y’s overnight camp in New Hampshire. With the outpouring of support from family and friends we were able to send 2 children (after hitting the goal for one child, David said why not aim for two) to overnight camp completely free of charge. Most importantly, these children were from Charlestown, the community my grandfather loved and adored so much.
In December 2015, we also lost my uncle David Whelan after his courageous battle with cancer. David was also a true community advocate, sat on every board imaginable, and would do anything for anyone. You cannot mention anything that has happened in Charlestown without David’s name being tied to it. Also, as I am sure many of you know, David was also the tax preparer for many, never taking a payment from anyone, but instead would ask everyone to make a donation to the Y’s Annual Campaign, especially last year after setting up the camp fund.
In 2016, after officially kicking off this campaign, we were able to send children to our overnight camps in New Hampshire, an experience these children never would of been able to do without this. This year, to honor both of these great men and continue their legacy of community involvement and support, I am hoping to double the number of Charlestown kids we send to camp under our new fund: “The Whelan Family Send a Kid to Camp” campaign. No gift is too small, and all the funds raised will go directly into this camp scholarship fund. My hope is to keep this going yearly to keep their memory alive.
To date, we have sent over 25 children to overnight camp fully cost free to the families - what an amazing tribute to 2 community connected leaders. Let's continue all this good work and continue sending children to enjoy experiences of a lifetime!
Thank you all for your continued support.
