THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO BUILD A BETTER US
Help me to continue to BRIGHTEN FUTUREs
My Y story is a long one, I began working at the YMCA in West Roxbury when I was 15 years old which means I have been working here for 20 years. These years have truly shaped who I am as a person. I am compassionate, understanding and responsible. These are all things that I am sure I would have developed as I grew, but as a YMCA employee I was learning these traits as part of my job.
I began working at a local after-school where I was just having fun with kids. I wasn’t aware of the impact that I was having. As I grew I was taking on more responsibility. I eventually became the Director of that program and from there went on to running multiple other sites and later moving on to overseeing multiple sites simultaneously. All of this was great and I learned a lot about myself and about others, I was able to see on a daily basis the impact that I was having on my community. Although I spent the majority of my time working in the afterschool program I would say that my most rewarding job has been as the Parkway Community YMCA Teen Director.
As the Teen Director I have been able to do some amazing things with my teens, cheer on marathon runners for the Prestigious Boston Marathon, prepare and pack food for chronically ill patients to be delivered to their home, work to deliver turkey dinners on Thanksgiving and Christmas and work with teens on their leadership and confidence.
I have been running a successful Substance Abuse and Risky Behavior Deterrent program-All Stars, worked over the past 5 years to grow Youth and Government that engages youth in Civic involvement and lets them have a voice in social and state change. I have taken kids to Chicago to compete nationally in a Judicial Competition, run a Teen Camp for the past 14 summers and many more things that enrich the lives of the teens in and around my community.
I get to wake up every morning with the potential to change someone’s life for the better. Just this October I got this email from a former Teen Camper:
It’s Winter from teen camp some years ago (Not to sound cocky but I doubt you have forgotten me) lol. I hope you are doing amazing!! I love you and Jonathan so much!! I’m a senior in high school now at BLA, and will be studying Pre-Med next September! I’m contacting you because I wanted to tell you how much I have benefited from coming to camp. I am so excited to say that Lily, Dusu and I have grown to become the best of friends! If we are not on FaceTime with each other then we are all hanging out. They both were in my sweet 16 court, our parents have become close friends and we frequently vacation together. They are even coming to move me into college. I just really wanted to let you know that teen camp provided me with my closest friends and memory’s that I will never forget.
I know this email is very informally written..I promise I can do better lol, I just wanted to thank you for a great experience that came with friends and memories that will last a life time.
(I attached a few pictures of us from the resent years). The first ones are from from sweet 16, The Drake and migos concert (I surprised lily with floor seats for her birthday last month).”
Please consider supporting the work I get to do every day and continue to help me affect change in my community.
