“you have to find that place that brings out the human in you. the soul in you. the love in you.” -r.m. drake
When I first found this quote I thought immediately of camp. Since I was 9 years old Pleasant Valley Camp has been the place where I am my favorite version of myself.
In a world full of screen time and social insecurity camp is the place where children are able to step away from all of that and make authentic connections with others. Through camp I was blessed with the opportunity to make friends with people from all different places and upbringings than myself. Some of my strongest friendships today are with people I would never have connected with without camp. Perhaps even more importantly though, I was surrounded by role models of strong, capable young women who helped me learn how to be an authentic individual, simply by leading by example.
As I have grown throughout my years at camp I have learned through experience about responsibility, problem solving, leadership and teamwork - but more than anything I’ve learned about the joy of giving back to a place that means so much to me. Last year while scrubbing the dining hall floor on my hands and knees I thought to myself how much I love my job. I cannot imagine any other place that would fill me with so much love that I would be grateful even while scrubbing the floor by hand.
Please help me share this love with others by donating to our annual campaign.
